Manitoba Hydro Nelson River HVDC Transmission System Bipole III Project

Manitoba Hydro Nelson River HVDC Transmission System Bipole III Project

The Manitoba Hydro Nelson River HVDC Transmission System Bipole III is a new Line Commutated Converter (LCC) transmission project required to improve overall system reliability and security in the province of Manitoba, Canada.

Teshmont is Manitoba Hydro’s Owner’s Engineer for the Bipole III project. Teshmont’s project involvement includes the northern Keewatinohk and southern Riel converter stations, AC switchyards, and electrodes, as well as the synchronous condensers (4 x 250 MVar) at Riel.

At the onset of the project, Teshmont performed preliminary feasibility studies, including establishing the performance and design criteria requirements for the HVDC system and the synchronous condensers. Budgetary cost estimates of the converter stations were also developed.

Teshmont developed the HVDC converter station technical specification, the AC switchyard technical specification and electrical aspects of the synchronous condenser technical specification. We then performed technical bid evaluations of the tenders and assisted Manitoba Hydro with contract negotiation and award. We are providing dedicated on-site construction and commissioning support to Manitoba Hydro at both the Riel and Keewatinohk converter stations.

In addition, Teshmont has assisted Manitoba Hydro with NERC Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) compliance requirements and documentation.

The project was successfully commissioned in 2018, and Teshmont is continuing to provide support on an as needed basis. We have been providing Manitoba Hydro with consulting services for over 50 years!
