EHV Consultants, a joint venture of Teshmont and BG Checo, conducted a feasibility study of the Tarbela – Faisalabad Project to transmit power generated at the Tarbela dam to the load centres to the south. The study examined line routing, line design parameters, optimization of conductor size and tower span, and special studies on insulator pollution.

The Water and Power Development Authority of Pakistan then hired EHV Consultants to provide engineering services for the implementation of the project. Teshmont provided design, procurement, inspection and expediting, construction supervision and commissioning servicesfor the transmission line and the 500/220kV substation.

The 500 kV system consists of a 330 km transmission line from Tarbela Generating Station in the northern region of Pakistan to Gatti Substation near Faisalabad. This was the first stage of a 500kV system which would later span the length of Pakistan.

The conductor arrangement is a flat formation 500 kV ac line with twin shield wires. The phase conductors are each a triple bundle with the sub-conductors being 28 mm diameter aluminium alloy conductors. Porcelain vee string insulators are used with 25 units in each leg of the string. All the towers are the self-supporting lattice type, using galvanized steel sections. The foundations are cast in place concrete pyramid type with stub angles embedded in the concrete.
