New Zealand HVDC Hybrid Upgrade

TransPower

New Zealand

Transpower operates a dc link between the North and South Islands of New Zealand and wanted to increase the power transferred. The project consisted of increasing the capacity of the existing ±250 kV, 600 MW dc transmission link, to a +270 kV/-350 kV, 1240 MW dc transmission link. Teshmont was selected to conduct studies and prepare specifications associated with the upgrade and provide ongoing engineering assistance through to commissioning.

The increase in capacity was achieved by paralleling the existing mercury-arc converters and submarine cables onto one pole, installing a new 350 kV thyristor converter plant and submarine cables on the other pole and reinsulating the existing dc transmission line for 350 kV operation.

Teshmont provided the following services:

  • Feasibility studies

  • Harmonic filter studies

  • Assistance with preparation of converter equipment and dc
    submarine cable specifications

  • Assistance with evaluating tenders

  • Commissioning the dc system

  • Transient studies for the dc line fault locator

  • Studies of the dc transmission line to determine the clearances and insulation requirements for the uprated dc transmission line, which
included identification of towers which required modification

  • Study of the insulation requirements and calculation of corona loss, RI, AN and electrical effects

  • Assistance with investigations to extend the dc system to Auckland,
which included analyzing costs, voltage, rating and cable type for three HVDC transmission alternatives between the North and South Islands

  • Developed replacement cost estimates for the New Zealand cable system
