The Malaysia – Thailand Interconnection was required to increase the efficiency and power transmission capacity between and within the two countries. The full bi-directional control of power through the interconnection also provided an increase in the reliability and dynamic performance of both ac systems. Teshmont was retained by TNB/EGAT from original design studies through to final commissioning.

The Malaysia - Thailand HVDC Interconnection Project has an initial system rating of 300 MW, with provision for expansion to 600 MW. The 120 km, ±300 kV dc transmission line connects converter stations in southern Thailand and northern Malaysia. The transmission line includes a full-length neutral conductor.

System and specification studies were carried out in 1994 and the specification for the converter equipment and transmission line was issued and bids evaluated in 1995. Stage 1 for 300 MW was placed in service in 2001.

Teshmont was involved with the project from the original design studies through to final commissioning. The services provided include:

  • Feasibility studies to determine the optimum voltage of the system and to select the optimum conductor size for the transmission line

  • System studies

  • Preparation of comprehensive technical specifications for the converter stations and HVDC transmission lines

  • Evaluation of bids

  • Review of designs and detail drawings submitted by the Contractor for the line components and converter stations

  • Inspection of manufacturing, administration of construction, and commissioning work to ensure compliance with specifications

  • Training and transfer of knowledge and technology
