The Highgate 200 MW back-to-back intertie was required to provide energy transmission from the power grid of Quebec to that of Vermont and New England.

This was a "fast-track" project allowing only 10 weeks from the start of engineering and studies to the award of contract and 17 months from award of contract to commercial operation at 150 MW.

Operation at the full capacity of 200 MW was achieved when the Hydro Quebec system was reinforced to meet this loading.

Teshmont was retained by Velco to provide the following services:

  • Carry out feasibility studies. The studies dealt in particular with the technical problem of connecting a dc system to a relatively weak ac power system and established the following:

    • Acceptable ac system voltages and var supply/absorption requirements

    • Load rejection overvoltages

    • Maximum acceptable ratings of switched capacitor and filter banks

  • Prepare of the converter station specification

  • Evaluate proposals

  • Monitor the contract

  • Review the system modifications and station design

  • Assist with construction supervision and commissioning

Following the failure of a converter transformer, Teshmont has been involved in determining the cause and the subsequent modification of all the station converter transformers
