Sabah Electricity Sdn. Bhd. sought to construct a 500 kV EHVAC connection between the generating station at Bakun,
Malaysia, to the load centre in Sabah, Malaysia. This connection would require the transfer of 1,200 MW of power over a distance of 680 km.
Teshmont was retained to carry out planning and equipment studies, as well as identify system requirements and prepare specifications. One of our main goals was to ensure that the system would be stable, despite its sheer size and voltage. It was determined that a significant number of voltage supports would be required to avoid operational constraints and power interruptions.
To create a system that would be stable and operate efficiently, Teshmont undertook the following tasks:
Performed planning studies to identify necessary system additions, upgrades, and replacements in existing wiring.
Performed load flow, transient stability, TOV/self-excitation, short circuit, reactive compensation, SSR screening, and small signal stability studies.
Conducted studies on equipment design, which included investigating compensation equipment, creating station single line diagrams, developing station layouts, outlining protection and control requirements, and coordinating station equipment insulation. Also studied breaker transient recovery voltages (TRV) station design requirements (both civil and mechanical), conceptual building designs, operator control and monitoring, fire protection, and environmental impact.
Developed specifications and bidding documents, and assisted with the evaluation of tenders.
